Tips for motoring in Europe

When you're planning your summer holidays you might be considering a driving holiday in a European country. It is often the best way to get to your destination, it means that you can really get to know the country you are visiting and also have the freedom to go where you want when you want. Driving abroad does however entail a little forward planning and some safety checks before you leave. Laws differ from country to country and it is important to err on the side of caution to avoid contravening any regulations.

Car insurance
Millions of motorists take their car abroad every year without checking that their car insurance covers them comprehensively abroad. Even though you have fully comprehensive car insurance in the UK the chances are you will only be covered third party fire and theft when in another country. It is advisable to call your motor insurance provider before you go and to upgrade your level of car insurance if you need to.

Your documents
You must take all the necessary documentation with you wherever you intend to go on holiday. You need to be able to prove that you are insured, that the car is yours and that it is taxed. The following documents must be carried with you at all times.

  • A valid driving license, not provisional and the paper counterpart if you have a photo card
  • The original vehicle registration document
  • Your passport
  • An international driving permit, where necessary

Drink driving and mobile phones
Wherever you go you should never drink and drive. Some countries impose very strict penalties for this offence and you could find yourself in a foreign jail if caught behind the wheel after a drink. Similarly many countries deem it an offence to use a mobile phone whilst driving. It is best to be safe and avoid doing anything dangerous at home or abroad.

Reflective jackets
These must be carried in your car in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Croatia in case you breakdown at night. The Jacket/waistcoat must conform to EU Standard BS EN 471: 1994 Class 1 or 2.

Overloading
Make sure you never overload your car when driving abroad. Overloading your car with luggage or alcohol, if you are on a booze cruise, can cause damage to your suspension, clutch and tyres and may invalidate your car insurance.
